Make a Cloak

You tuck the handles of the oars under your armpits for a minute, so you can pull the sheet out of your bag. You already inspected the sheet back on the sand and it was clean, so you wrap it around you, tying it around your neck so it covers your back. You also put up the hoodie of the tattered sweater you wear to cover the back of your head, and then you continue on.

You row along for about an hour before one of the swinging tentacles hits you in the back of the head, but the back of you is completely covered. As long as the goo has nothing living to feed on, it can only live for a couple of hours.

It takes you six hours or so to reach the island, if the fading light in the sky is anything to go on. Once you make it onto land, you make an orb of light so you can see clearly and look around, making sure to store your boat in a safe place away from the water for your journey home. The beach is covered in clumps of goo, probably washed up fish slowly being eaten alive. You can only hope no wild animals were foolish enough to try to eat one and bring the contagion farther inland.  You see a forest in front of you and an old paved road leading to the right.
