Ignore Familiar

Forest%20Mist_edited.jpg

Your confusion fades away and that thought, too, soon slips away. You enter a small clearing, and a man steps in front of you. He looks a bit like your father did, before he left you and your mother, and your heart aches at the sight of him.

“I’m here, child,” the man says, and he truly sounds just like your father did in the few memories you still have of him. “I was waiting for you.”

Of course, you think. It all makes sense now. Your father would never leave you on purpose. He came here, thinking you would know to follow him, knowing you would eventually follow the call of adventure as he did.

“Dad!” you say, and you start running. The small orb of light that you’d been maintaining as you walked flickers once, twice, and then disappears, plunging you into darkness. You think you see the smooth skin and suction pads of an octopus tentacle wave in the darkness just as the light blinks out, but you can’t be sure. Then, you are wrapped up in your father’s arm, his many arms. They wrap around you, cradling your head and your shoulders and wrapping around your back as you cry into his shoulder for all the years you missed him.
