A Fatal Encounter

As the rats close in on you, your breaths become rapid and shallow. The orb of light in your hand begins to fade until suddenly you hear your familiar condescending voice. Focus! If you die we’re both done for. You concentrate on the orb in your hand forcing all your energy into it as it expands slowly and steadily like a bubble of light. As the light grows and swells it stings your eyes and eventually expands outwards in an explosion of white radiance as though the sun itself now fills the tunnel. Now concentrate! The familiar beckons to you as the magic once again condenses into a tight sphere. You glance towards the giant rat and focus on its oversized head. As you do so the light flickers and shifts until a radiant burst of energy forms instantly between you and the rat, piercing its head with a bolt of energy.
